dated August 8, 1956: Bigger Bombay State

Bombay is to be a composite State consisting of Bombay City, Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Gujarat, Kutch, Vidarbha and Marathwada. The Government's decision to accept this proposal for a bigger, bilingual Bombay State was announced, amidst cheers, in the Lok Sabha on August 7 by Pandit G.B. Pant, Union Home Minister. He moved an amendment to the States Reorganisation Bill providing for the creation of the bilingual Bombay State. The Congress Parliamentary Party, which met on August 6, had adopted a resolution supporting the proposal. Prime Minister Nehru, who addressed the meeting, said this was a "historic decision by which we will be making a gift of a great composite State of Bombay to the nation."
