Steps to curb hooch trade in Kozhikode

Raids planned at suspected brewing centres

Kozhikode: The District Administration has decided to take stringent measures against the brewing and selling of spurious liquor in Kozhikode.

A meeting chaired by District Collector A. Jayatilak at the Collectorate here on Monday decided to carry our raids in suspected liquor brewing areas in the district. Deployment of forces at the Azhiyoor check-post would be strengthened in this connection.

Control rooms will be activated at the district and taluk-levels for the public to inform about brewing of spurious liquor. Complaints can also be registered over the telephone 2375264 / 2372927(district-level).

The phone numbers for the purpose at the taluks are 2376762 (Kozhikode), 2610410 (Perambra) and 2515082 (Vadakara).

Assistant Excise Commissioner K.G. Sasi told the meeting that 255 cases had been registered under the provisions of the Kerala Abkari Act and three under various Sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act this year. As many as 151 persons had been arrested involved in the various cases.

He said that over 2,100 litres of spirit, 1,200 litres of arrack and 154 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor had been recovered from the accused.

About 25 vehicles had also been seized in different cases. Nearly 1.32 lakh litres of wash had also been destroyed this year, Mr. Sasi said.

The block panchayat presidents from the districts, who attended the meeting, demanded that excise personnel monitor some of the places such as Muttatheplavu in Kavilumpara grama panchayat, Kaiveli in Kaikkodi grama panchayat, near Feroke railway station , Kaithapoyil in Puthuppadi grama panchayat, Arappuzha, Kakkad, Kzhiyariyoor, Cheliya, near Koyilandy railway station, Edacherry and Thurathiparambu.

P.T.A. Rahim, MLA, block panchayat presidents P. Surendran (Kummanal), M.M. Sasidharan (Kozhikode), K.K. Satheeshan (Pandalayini) and M.N. Paulose (Koduvally ) spoke at the meeting.
