JD(S) leaders plan conventions

NEW DELHI: Certain leaders of the Janata Dal (Secular) on Monday announced a plan to get cadres in different parts of the country to speak out against party president and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda.

The leaders, including members of Parliament M.P. Veerendra Kumar and Surendra Mohan, told a press conference that a national convention would be held where a declaration would be adopted that, "there is no more place for Mr. Deve Gowda in the party."

That event would be preceded by conventions in different States, including Karnataka. Mr. Surendra Mohan claimed that former Karnataka Minister P.G.R. Sindhia had agreed to help organise the event in Karnataka.

Leaders' charge

These leaders alleged that Mr. Gowda had not only aligned fully with his son H.D. Kumaraswamy, who had formed a coalition Government with the Bharatiya Janata Party, but had made the party "inactive."

Charging that Mr. Gowda had scripted the formation of the coalition, they said he had left the party machinery "jammed," not even issuing statements on vital issues affecting the people. He had also not been attending Parliament, they said.
