MANILA: Nearly 15,000 persons were evacuated on Monday from their homes in the face of an imminent eruption of Mayon volcano, according to the authorities. They sought shelter in state-run resettlement centres and schools. The alert reached level four early Monday triggering the mass evacuation. Six minor explosions in the crater were monitored, forming an ash column of more than 1,000 metres high, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The volcano, 300 km southeast of Manila, erupted mildly on July 14, when alert level three was declared. The lava flows have reached as far as 100 metres beyond the 6-km radius permanent danger zone since then. ``Mayon is almost ready to burst,'' said Ernesto Corpus, head of the volcanology section of the PHIVOLCS.
