Kadapa: Four persons sustained injuries in a group clash in Bukkayapalle panchayat in Duvvur mandal on Monday. Tirupal had been elected sarpanch, defeating Yellaiah in Sunday's elections. An altercation ensued and the clash followed. - Staff Reporter

Target set for SHG aid

CHITTOOR: District Collector S.S. Rawath has said that a target of Rs. 180 crores has been fixed for financial assistance to self-help groups this year. He was speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of a Union Bank ATM at Chittoor recently. - Correspondent

74 p.c. turnout in re-poll

KADAPA: Seventy four per cent votes were polled in re-polling held in polling station No. 5 at Gopavaram in Proddatur mandal on Monday. The Congress won nine panchayat wards and TDP 11 after counting. A re-poll will be held in Chavvavaripalle in Simhadripuram mandal on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

Sanitation drive from August 10

KADAPA: A fortnight-long sanitation drive will be launched in Kadapa district on August 10, Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Monday.

Speaking at the `Dial Your Collector' programme here, he asked panchayat officials to ensure de-silting of drains and prevention of water stagnation in all gram panchayats. He wanted steps to check the mosquito menace. He asked MROs, MPDOs and MEOs to inspect schools in rural and remote areas and verify attendance of teachers as well as students. - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: CPI district secretary Bhimlingappa said eight sarpanches backed by the CPI won the election. Also, 200 wards were won by their supporters. He said at several places, the CPI supporters lost the election by a thin margin. - Staff Reporter

Tributes paid to slain constable

Kadapa: Naxalites achieved no worthwhile goal in their 33-year-old movement but merely perpetrated violence, Kadapa Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy said on Monday. The SP visited Badvel Government Hospital and laid a wreath on the body of constable Nageswara Rao, of Komarole village, who was killed in crossfire between police and Maoists in Ahobilam area in Nallamala forests. - Staff Reporter

Naxalite gunned down

KURNOOL: A naxalite was gunned down by Greyhounds men near upper Ahobilam in the district on Monday. According to the police, a police contingent spotted three armed extremists at Avugori in Ahobilam complex at around 5.30 p.m. In the exchange of fire, one extremist was killed.

Slain naxals identified

KURNOOL: Two naxalites who were killed on Saturday and Sunday were identified as Damsatti, Rayalaseema Divisional Committee member, and Anji, gunman of State Committee member Obulesu. According to the police, Obulesu escaped while his gunman died. Both naxalites hailed from Anantapur district. - Staff Reporter

Panel to study G.O.s

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday directed the Group of Ministers to constitute a four-member official committee to look into any anomalies in G.O.s 72 and 610. Ministers — D. Srinivas, M. Satyanarayana Rao, Redya Naik and Koneru Ranga Rao — attended and later Mr. Srinivas told reporters that the Government had initiated steps to undo `injustice' done to Telangana in employment. - Special Correspondent

Plea to scrap G.O. 5

HYDERABAD: A roundtable conference organised here on Monday under the auspices of several Central trade unions sought scrapping of G.O. 5 on PSU reforms and of Implementation Secretariat of the Industries Department. The meeting decided to launch a signature campaign on August 13 and 14 in Singareni belt and at RTC depots and submit them to the Chief Minister. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Board of Intermediate Education on Monday announced extension of last date for admission to first year Intermediate up to August 14 for the benefit of candidates who had passed the SSC supplementary examination, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Teacher suspended

KARIMNAGAR: The in-charge DEO P. Srihari has suspended the Nusthullapur ZPHS physical education teacher P. Ashok Kumar on the charges of sexual harassment of Rajamani, headmistress of the Gollapalli Primary School. According to an official release here on Monday, the DEO said that Ashok Kumar had harassed Rajamani by concealing her service records and demanded that she satisfy his sexual desires for obtaining the service records.
