Safai Karamchari panel to be set up

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet on Monday gave its approval for setting up of a Safai Karamchari Commission to look into the grievances and complaints of the sanitation workers.

A Bill to this effect would be introduced during the Monsoon session of the Assembly likely to be held next month.

The Food and Supplies Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan informed that the approval by the Cabinet on setting up the Commission had fulfilled the long pending demand of this section of the society. He said the Government had fulfilled its commitment made to empower the sanitation workers.

The Commission will be headed by a Chairman and will have two members. It would look into the complaints and working conditions of sanitation workers across the Capital and work to ensure them a good deal and improving their lot.

In another decision, the Cabinet approved a scheme of the Health Department to undertake health check up of nearly 12 lakh children studying in Government schools. According to the proposal, all children studying in Government schools would undergo health check up for which the help of non-governmental organisations would be taken in view of huge number of children involved.

The Cabinet also approved the setting up of a Fare Revision Committee to look into the demand of the Delhi Transport Corporation for a fare hike that has been long overdue.

The Committee will be headed by the Commissioner (Transport) and have representatives from various Departments who will work out the details of the hike and submit a report to the Cabinet in three months.
