Breastfeeding awareness efforts successful: expert

Distribution of prizes, awareness campaigns mark valedictory function

  • Officers, anganwadi workers, self-help group members, voluntary organisations spoke to women

    TAMBARAM: Distribution of prizes, awareness campaigns, cultural programmes and `annaprasna' ceremony — where children are given the first solid meal — formed part of the valedictory function of the week-long breastfeeding awareness campaign at Medavakkam near Tambaram on Monday.

    The function was organised by Food and Nutrition Board of the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union unit of the Integrated Child Development Scheme. sThe two agencies had organised awareness programmes at Neelankarai, Kandanchavadi, Sholinganallur, Santhoshapuram in the past week. Officers from the two agencies, anganwadi workers, members of self-help groups and other voluntary organisations spoke to women on the importance of breastfeeding children, at least for the first six months. Speakers told young mothers not to be carried away by advertisements of baby food manufacturers. While stating categorically that babies should grow only with mother's feeding for the first six months, speakers also reminded them about the low-cost nutritious foods that were available locally.

    Various dishes from such low-cost nutritious foods items could be prepared and consumed by mothers.Usha Rani from the Food and Nutrition Board said during the week-long programme, they conducted literary and cultural competitions. She said efforts to increase awareness among women, particularly in rural areas, on breastfeeding was yielding positive results.
