Two boys drown

New Delhi: Two children were drowned in a drain in north-west Delhi, fire department said here on Monday. The victims were identified as Ganesh (13) and Rakesh (10), both residents of Sultanpuri. They accidentally fell into the deep drain while playing near it, fire brigade said. The bodies were fished out from the drain by Fire Department personnel.

Bail granted

New Delhi: A city court on Monday granted bail to a man who was co-accused in rape and extortion case of a girl in North West Delhi. Admitting the bail plea of accused Harjeet Singh, Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Garg enlarged him on the personal bond of Rs 15,000 and a surety of the like amount.

According to the prosecution, Singh accompanied Delhi Police (crime branch) Sub Inspector K.B. Jha to the victim's house in Sector 16, Rohini to demand money.

The girl hailing from Mumbai lodged a complaint with the Prashant Vihar police station that Jha came to his house in an inebriated condition and sexually assaulted her on June 26. A case was registered against Singh and Jha under Sections 376 (rape) and 384 (extortion) of the IPC. The Sub Inspector who was later arrested is in the judicial custody.

Lull in rainfall continues

New Delhi: The lull in rains, since the heaviest rainfall of the monsoon season on July 26, continued on Monday though the weatherman indicated possibility of another spell of rains in the next few days.

A swathe of clouds enveloping the skyline for the second consecutive day held forth hope for rains even as the Easterly winds continued to provide relief to people of Delhi from the humidity of the past few days.

The weatherman says slight coolness in the weather in the last couple of days is due to the Westward movement of the monsoon system.

New course

NEW DELHI: In a major initiative, the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) here has decided to introduce Masters in Prosthetics & Orthotics (MPO) course to impart knowledge and skills on technical advancements and promote research in prosthetics and orthotics (field of rehabilitation that deals with advanced aids).

Being launched in affiliation with the Indraprastha University from September 2006, the full-time two-year course will have 16 seats. The course has been designed to produce professionals who specialise in developing advanced aids and assistive devices. As part of the new course, a student exchange programme is also being planned with San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, Italy to expose students to technological developments outside the country.

Stating that orthotics and prosthetics is a specialised health care profession that combines a unique blend of clinical and technical skills, ISIC chairman Major H.P.S. Ahluwalia said: "Although there are several diploma and bachelor level courses in the country, our aim for starting a higher level degree course is to create highly skilled professionals in the area."
