Floods: YSR urges Centre to release Rs. 180 crores

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy requested the Central Government to declare the floods in the State and the havoc caused as national calamity and release Rs. 180 crores, which the State is entitled, in advance, towards second instalment of CRF. In a letter written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Dr. Reddy narrated the flood situation in the State and said the extent of loss can be assessed over the next few days since the water has not receded in the affected areas.

He said 100 people have lost lives while more than 1.15 lakh people were evacuated from 5,412 villages.

A statement from the Government said that Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil would conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas on August 9.

AICC president Sonia Gandhi is also likely to visit the State, the statement added.
