Pondicherry: C ash assistance of Rs.3,000 will be distributed immediately to each of the families having ration cards in Yanam in view of the hardship caused by floods. Announcing this on the floor of the House on Tuesday, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that the Local Administration Minister, Malladi Krishna Rao, who is now camping in the region, had sent him a detailed report on the flood havoc. Mr. Rangasamy said cash assistance of Rs. 3,750 for every hectare of paddy lost, Rs. 2,000 for a cattle shed and Rs. 2,000 for a haystack washed away in the floods would also be given. Later, speaking to newsmen Mr. Rangasamy said that the Government would also distribute 20 kg rice besides cash assistance of Rs. 3,000 to each of the 11,000 families rendered homeless in the floods. He said 285 huts had been damaged, 331 hectares of paddy lost and 164 cattle sheds damaged. He said he was keeping himself informed about the situation, and the latest reports said that the water level was coming down in the Godavari. Relief Commissioner of Pondicherry B.V. Selvaraj and the District Collector G. Theva Needhi Dhas briefed the Chief Minister on the extent of damage and also the relief works undertaken to help the public.
