Bharathiar varsity is champion

Coimbatore: Bharathiar University tallied 175 points to emerge champion of the Bharathiar University inter-collegiate weightlifting championship for women at the Nirmala College campus here on Tuesday. Host Nirmala College (163 pts) and NGM College (158 pts), Pollachi, finished second and third respectively.

Sports tournament

The Coimbatore Institute of Technology, as part of its golden jubilee celebrations, will conduct State-level inter-engineering tournaments in hockey, football, kabaddi and ball badminton for men and ball badminton and volleyball for women on its campus in Coimbatore on August 12 and 13.

Lokesh in final

At Erode, Lokesh and Vembarasan entered the boys' under-16 singles final of the district badminton junior championship at the Nilgiris indoor stadium courts here on Tuesday. In the semifinals, Lokesh made short work of Parthasarathy 21-16, 21-13 while Vembarasan survived a few hiccups on way to a 21-16, 11-21, 21-9 win over Nitin Abilash.

Facile win

At Namakkal, Paramathy Cricket Club (PCC), Paramathy Velur, posted a convincing 107-run win over GMCC (Tiruchengodu) in the TNCA-DCAN sponsored `B' division cricket league at the SPB Colony grounds in Pallipalayam on Sunday.

The scores (B division): PCC 317 for seven in 40 overs (Sounder 63, P. Saravanan 62) bt GMCC 210 in 32 overs (Gopi 51, M. Suresh Kumar four for 32); XI T&B CC (Singalandapuram) 185 in 37.1 overs (Sakthivel 59, Ravi 45, Saravanan four for 34, Karvannan four for 14) bt Bharath CC (Namakkal) 180 in 39 overs (Srinivasan 71, Ramakrishnan four for 50).

Selection trials
