According to the Collector, the District Vision Loss Prevention Society, with the assistance of government hospitals, Arvind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli, and NGOs was conducting free eye camps across the district and in the schools to identify the people and students with eye defects.
During the 219 camps organised in 2005-2006, free cataract surgeries were performed on 17,735 persons and 2,194 students from the BPL families, who were found to be having eye defects during the screening conducted in schools, received free spectacles.
In the past three months - from April to June - 55 free eye camps were held and cataract surgeries performed on 4,537 patients and 204 students received free spectacles. The first batch of 15 spectacles was distributed.
