Holiday for schools in Belgaum

Belgaum: Even as villagers on the banks of the Krishna in Chikkodi, Athani and Raibag taluks were relieved to see the receding level of water, heavy showers leading to increased release of water from the reservoirs in Maharashtra on Monday signalled fresh threats of flood in Belgaum district.

About 2.50 lakh cusecs of water is being released into the Krishna river forcing the district administration to sound red alert.

All nodal officers and rescue teams have been asked to be prepared for any emergency and provide timely assistance to the people.

According to sources here on Tuesday, 3 lakh cusecs of water had been discharged from the Almatti dam since Monday morning and 31,454 cusecs of water has been released from the Ghataprabha dam.

The Markandeya dam is also filling up.

The district administration has declared holiday for all schools in Belgaum city, taluk and Khanapur taluk on Wednesday in view of the incessant rainfall in the two taluks, according to an official announcement here on Tuesday night.
