`Media should avoid character assassination'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even though the media has the power and right to criticise, it should never indulge in character assassination, the former member of the State Planning Board C. P. John has said.

He was participating in a seminar on `Kerala Society and Media Ethics' organised by the State committee of the Students' Federation of India here on Monday.

The media should use its freedoms only within the boundaries of the ethics by which it is bound. Of late, there has been a tendency in the media to write about the personal traits of individuals. "Gossip columns in newspapers should not be about the personal lives of individuals or political leaders," Mr. John said.

Speaking on the occasion, chief editor of the Desabhimani daily V. V. Dakshinamoorthy said the moral degeneration in the field of journalism was very evident today.

SFI State president Sindhu Joy and the State secretary M. Swaraj also spoke at the seminar.
