Politics not to hamper tourism projects, says Kodiyeri

Staff Reporter

Says Government plans to promote tourism in the hilly regions

ALAPPUZHA: The State Government would complete the tourism projects started by the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) Government in a phased manner and the Government would not subvert any project just because the UDF Government started it, Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said.

Inaugurating the newly constructed house boat terminal and permanent pavilion of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Punnamada at a single function, Mr. Balakrishnan said the Government was of the view that politics should not hamper tourism development in the State. The State had tremendous potential in the areas of backwater tourism and beach tourism and Alappuzha district, in particular, was the focal point of the plans of the Government in backwater tourism, the Minister said.

Mr. Balakrishnan said the State would also draft plans to promote tourism activities in the hilly regions of the State. The Government would provide encouragement for starting helicopter services and seaplane services for foreign tourists, the Minister added. Mr. Balakrishnan said the unemployment woes of the State could be solved to a great extent if the information technology and tourism sectors were developed. At the same time, the traditional industries in the State also need to be given due attention, Mr. Balakrishnan said. He said those in traditional industries were not getting the benefits of development in tourism sector and steps should be taken to connect the two.
