Training programme for RTC employees

KURNOOL: Principal of APSRTC Staff Training College G. Srihari said if a conductor could take two passengers extra for each service, the corporation would earn an additional revenue of Rs 150 crores. Addressing an orientation programme for conductors, helpers and mechanics here on Tuesday, he said the role and attitude of the conductor was more important in strengthening RTC's financial position. He said mechanics and helpers too had a prime role to play as frequent breakdown of vehicles would put off passengers. — Staff Reporter

Prompt repayment of loans sought

KADAPA: Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh Housefed Gopal Naik on Tuesday called upon beneficiaries to promptly repay loans. Mr. Naik disbursed housing loans of Rs. 15.25 lakhs to 11 members of Akkayapalle Cooperative House Building Society. Society president Nazeer Basha presided.

Man dies in accident

KADAPA: Penchalaiah, 40, was killed when a bus hit his two-wheeler near the bus stand in Nandalur on Tuesday. Penchalaiah died on the spot. Nandalur police registered a case. — Staff Reporter

More research in homoeopathy sought

KADAPA: District Collector M.T. Krishna Babu on Tuesday underscored the need for greater research in homoeopathy. People should be encouraged to use homoeo medicines as they caused no harm, he said while inaugurating an auditorium, built with Union Health Ministry grants, on Government Homeopathic Medical College premises here. He garlanded the statue of `Father of Homeopathy' Samuel Hahnemann.

Shuttle tourney begins

Tirupati: The 40th South Central zonal-level shuttle badminton tournament of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) began at the Srinivasa sports complex here on a grand note on Tuesday. The tourney, conducted for sportspersons (employees) from all over Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, is attended by 16 division-level teams from Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Vizag, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Kadapa, Bangalore, Belgaum, Raichur, Dharwad, Mysore and Udupi.

Hindi workshop

HYDERABAD: A two-day Hindi workshop for Assistant General Managers of Food Corporation of India in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka was launched here on Tuesday by Executive Director, FCI, South, Chennai, A. S. Chabra. In his address, Mr. Chabra said such programmes would help achieve national integration. - Special Correspondent

Attempt to rob banks

MACHILIPATNAM: Two unidentified persons made futile attempts to rob two banks in Chinnapuram village in Machilipatnam rural mandal on Tuesday. The police, who collected the fingerprints of the miscreants from the two premises, said it was the handiwork of the same persons. - Staff Reporter

Suri's remand extended

ANANTAPUR: The Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate's court has extended till August 22 the judicial custody of the suspects in the Tagarakunta Prabhakar murder case of 2004 and the case of conspiracy to blast the house of Paritala Ravindra in 2000. While G. Suryanaryana Reddy alias Suri was produced in the court on Tuesday, other suspects including J. Srinivasa Reddy alias Moddu Sreenu lodged in Hyderabad jails were produced through video linkage. - Staff Reporter

Woman kills children, ends life

Kakinada: A lecturer in a private college, Vinnipogu Vidyullatha (29), strangled to death her two children before committing suicide at her residence in Anaparty on Tuesday. Estrangement from her husband is stated to have led her to the extreme step. - Correspondent

Blasts cause panic

KADAPA: Four bombs exploded mysteriously in the once faction-ridden Alavalapadu village in Vempalle mandal on Tuesday, but no casualties were reported. One of the bombs exploded near Peerla Chavidi and the three others on a dung heap in Alavalapadu. The explosions caused panic among the locals. - Staff Reporter

Dacoit nabbed

KURNOOL: Crime Control police arrested an inter-state dacoit, identified as Pala Venkateswara Rao alias Kalyan (30) on Tuesday and recovered jewellery worth Rs. 1 lakh from him. The police said Venkateswara Rao was wanted in 32 cases in several districts. Eight other members of the gang led by Venkateswara Rao had been arrested last year and jewellery worth Rs. 7 lakhs recovered from them. - Staff Reporter

Relief initiative

HYDERABAD: Teams of Andhra Pradesh Mahila Congress will tour flood-hit districts and organise relief work with the help of voluntary organisations, students and housewives. K. Ganga Bhavani, president of the State Mahila Congress Committee, told reporters on Tuesday that the teams would leave for the districts on Wednesday. - Special Correspondent

Bank officers' demand

HYDERABAD: The State unit of All-India Bank Officers' Confederation has demanded withdrawal of G.O. 5 on PSU reforms and abolition of the Industries Department's Implementation Secretariat. At a meeting on Monday it was felt the contents of the order and the way it was issued clearly showed the World Bank's impact on the State's PSUs. - Special Correspondent

Aid released

Amalapuram: Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao has said that the State Government has released Rs. 90 crores under TR-27 Account for flood relief works and given free hand to Collectors to spend the amount immediately. He said on Tuesday that there were 40,000 people in relief camps all over the State. - Staff Reporter

Chopper intrusion

TIRUMALA: TTD officials faced anxious moments when a chopper unexpectedly hovered in the sky atop the temple town of Tirumala. It may be mentioned that the TTD as part of strengthening its security has already approached the Central Government asking it to declare the sky over the hill temple a no-fly zone. - Staff Reporter
