Metro to increase frequency today

Special arrangements have been made to meet the Raksha Bandhan rush Trains would operate at peak frequency all through the day

NEW DELHI: Remembering full well that the ridership on Delhi Metro had shot up by 45 per cent on Raksha Bandhan last year, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has this time decided to operate its trains at peak frequency from 8 a.m. to 8-30 p.m. during the festival on Wednesday.

During the peak frequency period on Wednesday, trains will be available every four minutes on Line 1 (Shahdara to Rithala) and Line 2 (Central Secretariat to Vishwa Vidyalaya) and every five minutes on Line 3 (Barakhamba Road to Dwarka Sector-9).

DMRC said while normally trains operate at this frequency from 8 a.m. to 12-30 p.m. and then from 4-30 p.m. to 8-30 p.m., with the headway between trains being between 6 to 10 minutes during non-peak hours, on Wednesday in view of the expected rush, trains would operate at peak frequency all through the day.

As a result of increase in frequency, 1,190 train trips will be run on Wednesday. In addition, Delhi Metro will also open extra ticket counters and deploy additional staff at important stations. The train operations will start as always from 6 a.m. and the last train would depart from all the terminal stations at 10 p.m..

Last year on Raksha Bandhan, the number of passengers had increased by 45 per cent. As against the normal ridership then of 2.5 lakh passengers per day, on the day of the festival the number had gone up to 3.6 lakh. Since only Lines 1 and 2 of Delhi Metro were operational then, and now Line 3 is also operational -- with the total ridership on the system being 4.5 lakh per day -- special arrangements have been made this time to ensure that the needs of the commuting public are addressed properly.
