Government urged to expedite Vizhinjam project

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC general secretary and former MP V.S. Sivakumar has urged the State Government for immediate measures to remove the roadblocks to the Vizhinjam container terminal project.

In a press note issued here on Wednesday, he said the container hubs in Singapore, Colombo and Dubai and the domestic ports in Tuticorin and Kolachel were expanding their facilities to meet the expected growth in freight traffic.

`Will affect development'

He warned that further delay in clearing the Vizhinjam project would affect the potential to develop it as a major transhipment terminal.

Mr. Sivakumar called on the Government to exert pressure on the Centre to get the project cleared or to go in for fresh bids.

Another option, he pointed out, was to mobilise funds through the Vizhinjam Seaports International Limited, the special purpose company set up by the former United Democratic Front (UDF) Government.

Mr.Sivakumar said the UDF would launch an agitation to press for the project if the Government failed to take urgent steps.
