Rev. Amalraj ordained Bishop of Ootacamund

Udhagamandalam: All roads in this hill station on Wednesday led to the Rex School ground where people in general and Catholics in particular flocked in large numbers to witness the Episcopal

ordination of Most Rev. A. Amalraj as the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Ootacamund.

Elaborate arrangements had been made for the occasion with all the Catholic educational institutions closed on Wednesday.

The Bishop-elect was brought to the venue in a colourful procession. The Archbishop of Madras Most Rev. A.M. Chinnappa, who was the principal consecrator, ordained Amalraj as the Bishop of Ootacamund.

The Diocesan Administrator Rev. A. Antony Samy read out the papal appointment order.

Earlier among those who participated in an Episcopal ordination mass were about 10 Bishops and 200 priests.

Delivering the homily the Bishop of Salem Most Rev. Singaroyan said that while the functions of a Bishop were manifold, he should accord highest priority to ensure the welfare of the people. The Bishop-Emeritus of Coimbatore M. Ambrose who was the co-consecrator also spoke.
