dated August 10, 1956: Bilingual Bombay

The Lok Sabha on August 9 passed by 241 votes to 40 the official amendment for a bigger bilingual State of Bombay. Earlier, on the basis of a voice vote, the Speaker declared the official amendment carried, but division was pressed by many members. The Home Minister's amendment, as announced earlier, sought to modify the clauses relating to the formation of Gujarat and Maharashtra States and the future status of Bombay City. The clause, as amended now, proposes a bigger bilingual State of Bombay with Maharashtra, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Bombay City, Gujarat, Kutch and Saurashtra. Mr. N.V. Gadgil voted against the amendment in defiance of party whip. There was prolonged cheering when the Speaker announced the result.
