This Day That Age
The Egyptian delegation at the UN is looking at the possibility of bringing the Suez Canal question before the Security Council on the ground that the Anglo-French military movements constitute a threat to peace. From talks with the Egyptian sources at the UN, this seems to be Egypt's position: There can be no question of denationalising the Suez nor of handing over its control to an international agency, as that would amount to surrender of her sovereignty. But Egypt is prepared to give reasonable guarantees that she will not interfere with shipping in the Suez Canal and she is willing to discuss this at an international conference convened under the aegis of UN. What the Egyptian delegation is aiming at is to get the Security Council to take note of the crisis and call a conference "for reaffirming the principles" of the Constantinople Convention governing navigation in the Suez.
