Corrections and clarifications

"Maratta period cannonballs found at Thanjavur" (July 29, 2006) was about the discovery of cannonballs, "each weighing 70 kg, and with a circumference of two feet and a one-foot diameter". A reader felt there was an error as if these dimensions were correct, the value of "pi" should be two. Our Thanjavur Correspondent clarifies that each cannon ball as measured by T. Subramanian, Archaeology officer of the State Archaeology Department is: circumference 3 ft 9 in (114 cm), not two feet (or 61 cm); diameter one foot two inches (35.6 cm). The approximate figures were given by the officer at the time of excavation. Also, the weight is 80 kg (and not 70 kg as mentioned in the report). This works out to 3.21, which is close to the value of "pi".

Referring to the report "Coimbatore, Nilgiris unaffected by chikungunya, say health officials" (August 9, 2006), a professor of microbiology, Madurai Medical College says: "It has been wrongly mentioned that both dengue and chikungunya are `caused' by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Aedes aegypti only transmits or spreads the disease. Both dengue and chikungunya are caused by a virus."

In connection with the report "Korean Ambassador calls on Sheila" (New Delhi, "Briefly", August 9, 2006, page 4) — on the ambassador meeting Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit — Mr. Seung-Ho Kim, Counsellor, Information & Culture, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, has pointed out that the name of the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea was misspelt as Mr. Choi Jung-Li. It should have been Mr. Choi Jung-il.
