NEW DELHI: Activists from civil society groups, environmentalists and non-governmental organisations on Wednesday stormed the premises of the Asian Development Bank's country office here, demanding that the ADBstop funding development projects which resulted in plundering of natural resources. The protesters blocked the gates for an hour until the police arrived at the scene. Under the banner of the People's Forum against ADB (PFAADB), they observed August 9 as the "ADB Quit India Day." The ADB is funding the Kerala and Karnataka urban development projects, several highway and expressway projects in the northeast, and power sector and agro-business projects in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The activists alleged that staff and security men manhandled them inside the ADB office. Three women were also roughed up. The PFAADB, in a statement, said it would take up this issue with the Government. The August 9 protests were a follow-up on the series of demonstrations against international financial institutions such as the ADB and the World Bank.
