Indian eves restrict England

London : Bengal pacer Jhulan Goswami led the Indian women's dominance as the visitors restricted England to a modest 223 on the opening day of the first cricket Test at Leicester on Tuesday.

In reply, Indian women were 11 for one, losing the wicket of K.V. Jain.

Twenty-five year-old Goswami claimed three for 46 as she broke the back of the England batting and gave the Indians a terrific start in the four-day match.

Nineteen-year old Preetim Dimri chipped in with two for 43 with her left-arm chinaman while veteran Hemlata Kala also picked up two wickets for 16.

The England innings

The England innings revolved around a sedate 73 from Caroline Atkins who batted nearly three hours and struck 12 fours in a 146-ball knock.

Twenty-five-year-old Atkins, who has also played for South Australia, received little support from her teammates although Clare Taylor (32) and Beth Morgan (30) contributed fairly at the top and the lower order respectively.
