KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Panchayat Employees Organisation has demanded that the Government speed up computerisation of grama panchayat offices so as to reach the benefits of decentralisation to the public. KPEO State president P.C. Velayudhankutty and general convener of the reception committee Mohanan Poyilil said that the Centre had sanctioned Rs.33 crores for the State Government during 1998-2001 for the purpose. "Not even 10 per cent of the panchayats have been computerised so far. Also, the Government had to repay Rs.11 crores as interest for the amount as the amount was allowed to lapse," they alleged. The Information Kerala Mission (IKM) had spent only Rs.9.9 crores till now. Of the total Rs.33 crores, 10 per cent was grant and 70 per cent loan amount. They said that the IKM had been turned into an institute that posed roadblocks to the decentralisation process by not even spending the grant amount in total. The 24th State conference of the organisation would be held here from August 11 to 13. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy would inaugurate the conference. A public meeting to mark the valedictory of the conference would be inaugurated by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala.
