`Evasion by G. Mamidada traders being assessed'

  • Persons responsible for the unlawful act will be brought to book
  • Taxpayers' cooperation sought in achieving next year's targets

Kakinada: The assault on income tax officials during special raids by a mob at G. Mamidada village recently is being viewed seriously.

"We will not rest till the persons responsible for the unlawful act are brought to book," asserted Prashant Guptha, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Visakhapatnam region, at a press conference here on Wednesday. Stating that there was no lapse whatsoever on the part of the officials, Mr. Guptha said that the police were informed about their operation in advance and their protection sought.

He, however, said that neither the officials nor the police anticipated such an unruly behaviour from the villagers. Stating that the law would take its own course, he said on behalf of the Income Tax Department they were taking all steps to assess the tax evasion by G. Mamidada traders.

    `Targets achieved'

Mr. Guptha, whose jurisdiction spans five districts (from Srikakulam to West Godavari), said that the tax collection target of Rs. 834 crores set last year was surpassed with the achievement of Rs.900 crores.

Hoping to exceed this year's target of Rs.1,160 crores, he sought the cooperation of taxpayers in this endeavour.

He said that the number of assessees in the region was 2,84,313 and as many as 1,36,394 returns were received till July end. He said that the time for filing returns had been extended up to October 31 for persons whose accounts need not be audited.

Commissioner of Income Tax, Rajahmundry, M.S. Chandrasekharan and Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Kakinada range, G. Srinivasa Rao were present.

Later, Mr. Guptha inaugurated the new premises of the I-T office at Deepthi towers.
