Mild tremor felt in Thiruvananthapuram Thiruvananthapuram: A mild tremor, measuring 2.5 on the Richter Scale, triggered panic in the suburban areas of Kilimanoor, Kallara and Nagaroor, nearly 25 km from the city, early Wednesday morning. The tremor occurred at 4.20 a.m. and lasted for nearly three seconds. The Seismology Unit at the MET Centre here recorded the tremor. Met Centre director K. Santhosh said the epicentre may have been nearly 25 km from the city. — Special Correspondent

Two killed

Thiruvananthapuram: Two persons were killed when the car in which they were travelling collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) fast passenger bus near the Central Reserve Police Force camp, Pallippuram, on National Highway 47 on Wednesday.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Minil Kumar, 36, of Panikavilakom Veedu, Sasthavattom, Attingal, and Madhavan Pillai, of Aji Nivas, Kaduvayil, Attingal. The accident took place at 2.30 p.m. No one in the bus was injured. The KSRTC bus, attached to the Attingal depot, was on its way from Attingal to Thiruvananthapuram, and the car from Thiruvananthapuram to Attingal. The cause of the accident is not known, the police said. — Staff Reporter Assumes office

Thrissur: A. Akbar, the new managing director of the Kerala State Financial Enterprises, assumed office here on Wednesday. Mr. Akbar had earlier served as general manager of Federal Bank and chief executive officer of Kabul Bank. Sale of intoxicants to be banned

Thrissur: The district administration will initiate steps to prevent the sale of pan masala and other intoxicants from shops near educational institutions. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the Childline District Committee, chaired by District Collector M. Beena here on Wednesday. The meeting said that use of pan masala was on the rise among the young, especially high school students. — Staff Reporter

Rs.890-crore profit for BSNL

KOLLAM: Chief General Manager of the BSNL Kerala S.A. Thomas has said that the Kerala unit of the BSNL was able to make a handsome profit of Rs.890 crores last year. He was addressing a function here on Wednesday at which BSNL's Sanchar Seva Padak, Sanchar Sarathy and Best Exchange Awards-2006 under the Kollam Telecom were given away. Mr. Thomas said that the profit registered by BSNL is the highest made by a public sector company in the State. — Staff Reporter

MLA criticises AI, Indian for delays

MALAPPURAM: K. Mohammedunni Haji, MLA from Kondotty, has protested against the apathy of Air-India and Indian towards the people of Malabar. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the MLA criticised the airlines for continual delays of their flights to Calicut International Airport, Karipur. Mr. Mohammedunni said that frequent delays and problems of flights from Karipur to Gulf destinations were part of a conspiracy hatched by some vested interests. After a meeting with Airport Director R. Veeraswamy, the MLA said that efforts should be made to ensure that inordinate delays of flights do not recur at Karipur. He also said that efforts should be made to bring in foreign airlines to Karipur. - Staff Reporter
