KOCHI: The High Court on Wednesday stayed the conditional bail granted to Sobha John, first accused in the case of assaulting the Sabarimala tantri Kandararu Mohanararu and extorting money from him, by the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) on Tuesday. Justice K.R. Udayabhanu issued the interim stay order on a petition filed by the State seeking to set aside Tuesday's order of Ernakulam CJM P.D. Sharangadharan. The court also issued notice to Sobha John on a petition filed by the Public Prosecutor seeking to cancel the bail order of the CJM. The CJM had granted conditional bail to Sobha John on executing a bail bond of Rs.25,000 with two solvent sureties for the same amount. In the petition, the State Prosecutor submitted that if the accused was released on bail, it would adversely affect the investigation in the case. The prosecution submitted that six accused, including an important accused, were yet to be arrested and the mobile phones, ornaments and material objects were yet to be recovered. Director General of Prosecution P.G. Thampi submitted that if she was granted bail, the investigation would be derailed. The CJM had denied bail to the co-accused, Anil Kumar and Vigil. He had granted bail to Sobha John considering that she was a woman who was in custody from August 3.
