Man held, sandalwood seized

MYSORE: Officials of the Forest Department have arrested a man at Sorekoppa in the Metikuppe range of the Nagarahole National Park on the charge of smuggling sandalwood. They have recovered from him sandalwood billets valued at Rs. 90,000.

Sources said the accused had been identified as Sannaswamy, alias Gali of Jiyara Hirehalli village in H.D. Kote taluk. Thimme Gowda of Jiyara Hirehalli, and Chikka Kala and Swamy of Jiyara hamlet, who were with Sannaswamy, managed to escape.

The sources said that forest staff found the accused smuggling sandalwood from the forest to Jiyara Hirehalli village. On seeing the staff, three of them escaped.
