LIFE GOES ON: Villagers in Kouta of Jainad mandal drying foodgrains after the floods receded on Wednesday.
ADILABAD: Receding floods in all the six mandals in Adilabad district on Wednesday made way for the villagers to return home and begin operation salvage. Absence of Governmental relief did not dampen their spirits nor disturbed the focus on `reconstruction'. People in Kouta and Sangvi villages in Jainad mandal were seen sifting through the debris left in their homes in the wake of receding floods. The most common scene was villagers spreading damp and stinking foodgrains in open places to dry them up for possible use later. These foodgrains survived complete destruction by the flooding waters because they were stored in somewhat water- tight containers. At other places, people were seen repairing roofs of their houses damaged in the floods caused by Penganga river during the last four days. Tiles on the roofs were replaced and uprooted corrugated iron sheets were put back in their place. Collector R. Subba Rao said all efforts to provide relief were being made by the administration.
Relief material
He said orders have been issued for restoration of electric supply wherever it was cut off. Bleaching powder and phenyl would be sent to all the villages in six mandals on Thursday, he said. Each of the family, which suffered losses during the period, will be given 10-kg rice and some kerosene and Rs. 1,500 for clothes and repairs to their houses. When it was pointed out that neither officials nor relief has reached many villages, he said the fair price shop dealers in these areas too faced problems similar to the ones faced by the flood victims. However, as soon as the approach to the ravaged villages open, relief material would be transported, he said. Official figures put the number of houses damaged fully and partly at nearly 11,000 and crop was damaged in an estimated 58,000 acres.
