Housing programme reviewed

KURNOOL: Collector M. Dana Kishore reviewed the progress of the housing programme under Indiramma on Wednesday and asked officials to complete 50 per cent of the 76,000 houses by next month. He said so far, 18,000 houses are half-completed. He said beneficiaries who failed to complete the houses because of financial constraints should be helped under Indira Kranti Patham. - Staff Reporter

MRO suspended

KURNOOL: Pagidyala Mandal Revenue Officer has been suspended on the charge of irregularities in the assignment of land to the poor. Collector M. Dana Kishore who recently inspected Indira Prabha action plan found it had no genuine poor farmers as beneficiaries. Two technical assistants Saikrishna and Valibeg who were with the DWMA has also been sacked. - Staff Reporter

Flood level increases

KURNOOL: The flood level in Tungabhadra has increased due to heavy rain in the catchment area in Karnataka. On Wednesday, the flood discharge at Sukesula barrage into the river was 34,760 cusecs while the KC canal was drawing 2,539 cusecs. The flood flow is likely to continue for a few more days as around 40,000 cusecs is flowing at Mantralayam. - Staff Reporter

Call to solve civic problems

KURNOOL: CPI city secretary K. Jagannatham and corporator Giddamma on Wednesday urged Municipal Commissioner Somi Reddy to take immediate steps to solve civic problems in Bangarupet of ward 45. Street lighting was poor and damaged lamps were not replaced immediately. The number of public taps was also inadequate and many families could not afford private taps. They asked the Commissioner to provide widow and old age pensions to the needy. - Staff Reporter

Another girl dies in relief camp

BHADRACHALAM: Viral fever claimed the life of a four-year-old girl in a flood relief camp in the temple town on Wednesday. Karnati Sarika was down with fever for three days. A nine-year-old girl died in similar conditions in Kothulagutta relief camp in Kunavaram mandal on August 7. — Staff Reporter

Four washed away

ADILABAD: Four persons--Omprakash Mandhani, 57, a cloth merchant, his wife Asha Devi, 52, daughter Leela Biyani, 35, and driver Jumma Bhai-- who went missing reportedly from Adilabad on the intervening night of August 5 and 6, are now presumed to have been washed away in floodwaters of Penganga river on the Andhra Pradesh-Maharashtra border. The jeep in which they travelling was pulled out of the swamp left by the receding Penganga on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Two drowned in canal

Kakinada: Chittigolla Srinivasa Rao (22) and Tuvva Saheb (65), both from Krapa Chinthalapudi village, were drowned in flooded Mummidivaram- Magam canal on Wednesday. The Mummidivaram police have registered a case. — Correspondent

Appeal for donations

HYDERABAD: The State branch of Indian Red Cross Society has appealed for donations to help flood-affected people in Bhadrachalam, East and West Godavari, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Warangal districts. Cash, cheques and DDs can be sent in favour of the Indian Red Cross Society, AP State branch. The society is observing August 12 as `fund raising day'. — Special Correspondent

Five freedom fighters felicitated

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday felicitated five freedom fighters in connection with the Quit India Day celebrations here. Its vice-president A. Chakrapani, who hoisted the party flag at Gandhi Bhavan, later honoured Hasina Begum, Ravipati Mahananda, Boggarapu Sitaramaiah, K.V.Ramanaiah and A.S. Prakasa Rao for their contribution to the freedom struggle. He recalled the sacrifices made by freedom fighters for freeing the nation from the British rule. — Special Correspondent

Godavari level may rise

BHADRACHALAM :The Godavari flood level which came down to 52.9 feet at the temple town on Wednesday is likely to go up again on Thursday because of increase in the discharge of flood flow from the projects upstream. There is no threat of fresh flood in the river, said the officials here.-Staff Reporter
