Irrigation projects: Sonia assures help

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi reportedly assured Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy that she would personally take up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the issue of providing necessary funds for speedy completion of irrigation projects in the State.

The Congress president is understood to have given the assurance after seeing the havoc caused by floods in the State on Wednesday. Ms. Gandhi expressed concern that while several parts of the State were reeling under floods, some others were facing a drought-like situation.

Sources in the Chief Minister's Office said that Ms. Gandhi opined that completion of all the major irrigation projects across Krishna and Godavari was the permanent solution to drought and floods.
