Punjab disburses Rs. 204 crores to riot victims

Of the 15,254 claims received from State, 11,745 were settled and 2,038 rejected


  • 10,222 families of riot victims get rehabilitation grant

    CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Government has disbursed Rs. 204.44 crores, as rehabilitation grant, to the 10,222 families of victims of 1984 riots till date and has assured that the matter of another 1,523 such cases would be settled shortly.

    The grants are being provided under the package announced by the Union Government, which had promised a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each affected family.

    According to an official release quoting the Revenue, Rehabilitation, Relief and Resettlement Minister, Jasjit Singh Randhawa, a total of 15,254 claims were received by the Deputy Commissioners throughout the state.

    Out of these, 11,745 were settled and 2038 rejected while 1079 claims are still under consideration.

    He assured that the remaining cases of disbursement pending with Deputy Commissioners of Amritsar, Ludhiana and Mohali besides others under consideration would be disposed off at the earliest.

    The Minister said the State Government had also provided 269 jobs and 2471 houses and flats to the victims' families.

    A maximum of 86 jobs and 919 houses and flats were provided in Jalandhar and Mohali districts while 206 affected families were allotted plots in other districts.

    Similarly, commercial properties and marriage grants have been provided to 999 and 140 riot affected families, respectively. Of these 201 plots and 56 marriage grants were given in Ludhiana alone and 430 commercial properties were allotted in Amritsar.

    Mr. Randhawa mentioned that the State Government was also providing a monthly subsistence allowance of Rs. 2500 to 300 riot affected widows.
