TIRUCHI: The Government Railway Police (GRP) have embarked on an exercise to obtain ISO 9001:2000 certification for their police stations at Tiruchi and Madurai. The GRP authorities kick-started the process by organising a comprehensive training programme for their men attached to the railway police station here on Wednesday. A Srirangam-based private consultancy firm has been identified to impart the two-month training . Since the Tiruchi station has around 100 policemen attached to it, the training will be conducted in batches. It began for the first batch of 20 people at the GRP's Special Branch Office at Ponmalai here. Besides enlightening the trainees on what ISO actually meant, the sessions would cover all aspects, including the police-public interface and the ways to further improve them, proper maintenance of records, better documentation, prompt redress of public grievances and evolution of standard operating procedures for investigation, man management, etc. The Superintendent of Police, GRP, Tiruchi, G. Karthikeyan, told The Hindu that the training aimed at enabling the policemen to further fine-tune the established system and procedure while gearing up to obtain the certification. Though a system was already in place, it would be standardised and a systematised way of handling public grievances would emerge in the end, he added. Once the training gets over, the consultant will conduct an internal audit to ensure that there are no lacunae or lapses. He will then call for an external audit, which will be done by an ISO certifying organisation. The SP said training for the men attached to the Madurai railway police station would commence in that city on Friday.
