Kerala
The Supreme Court's order extending trawling to 17 more days, taking the total ban to 62 days of non-fishing days, had put the fish workers to difficulty of course, but also spawned a rare show of unity among the fish workers by forming a collective comprising Mahal Committees and Araya Samajams and political party leaders and followers. This was in the backdrop of incidents of communal and political violence being reported from the coastal areas of the district. Traditional Fishworkers Protection Council, a collective of traditional fish workers in the district, also organised a march to the Collectorate here and held a demonstration there on Thursday. The condition of fish workers was very pathetic. Also, thousands of others who eke out their livelihood by associating themselves with the fish selling activities were also pushed into penury.
