Letters to the Editor
The editorial "The continuing neglect of schools" (Aug. 8) was thought provoking. If one sees magnificent government school buildings, they must be 50 years old. No big investment in buildings has been made in recent years despite the levy of education cess. The Government is accountable to the taxpayers. It can evolve a pay-and-study higher education system and utilise the profits for providing quality primary education to the poor.

We hear our leaders indulging in tall talk on improving education. But nothing happens on the ground. Politicians don't care because their children do not go to government schools. Given the condition of these schools, is it any surprise that private institutions thrive?
