Student thrown off balcony
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA:
West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, concerned over the violence involving two groups of students within the campus of the Bengal Engineering and Science University [BESU] in Shibpur, Howrah, on Wednesday, sought details from the Vice-Chancellor, Nikhil Ranjan Banerjea, who met him at his office in the State Secretariat here on Thursday.
Mr. Bhattacharjee was apprised of the situation and the events leading to the disturbances.
A third-year student of the university's electrical engineering department suffered critical injuries in the head when he was allegedly thrown off the first floor balcony of the hostel as the two student groups came to blows.
The institution is among the oldest engineering colleges in the country, having been established in 1856. It was accorded the status of a university in October 2004.
