Guwahati: Assam will get Rs. 1,000 crore under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) for 2006-2007, P. Sukumar, Deputy Secretary in the Human Resource Development Ministry, said on Thursday. Addressing a campaign organised by the Press Information Bureau at Uparhali, Mirza, in Kamrup district, he said the State had plans to construct 35,000 additional classrooms in various schools with the SSA fund. Assam Education Minister Ripon Bora said Rs. 600 crore would be spent during the current fiscal for improving infrastructure including construction of rooms and toilets. Depending on the actual requirement, each school would be given a grant ranging from Rs 2 lakh to 6 lakh, at Rs 2 lakh for construction of one room. The money would be released by September. A survey was already done for improving the teacher-student ratio to the prescribed 1:40. Sri Protik Hazela, State Mission Director for the SSA, said that under the scheme 13,400 schoolrooms had been constructed at a cost of Rs 1.87 crore in Assam in the last four years. Every school was given Rs 7,000 a year for maintenance and repair works.
