MADURAI: The Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration, M. K. Stalin will lay the foundation stone for 899 works, including the second drinking water pipeline from Vaigai dam to Madurai city, here on Sunday. He will also inaugurate 153 works, completed at a cost of Rs. 7.86 crore, in the district on the occasion.
Second pipeline
Mayor C. Ramachandran said the 67 km-long second drinking water pipeline would be laid at a cost of Rs. 59.31 crore. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renovation Mission would fund 50 per cent of the project costs. While the State Government would contribute 20 per cent of the fund, the remaining 30 per cent would be borne by the Corporation. The second pipeline would help draw 1,500 mcft of water from the Vaigai dam without any seepage and evaporation loss. Presently, only 600 mcft is drawn. "The project has been designed to cater to the city's requirement for the next 15 years," Mr. Ramachandran said. The new scheme, to be implemented in 24 months, would ensure equal distribution of water throughout the city and also help water managers cater to inaccessible areas. The Union Minister for Forests and Environment, A. Raja issued orders to sanction Rs. 10.14 crore and Rs. 7.31 crore for the third and fourth phases respectively of the National River Conservation Programme on Wednesday. This amount is inclusive of the Union Urban Development Ministry's share. Mr. Stalin would lay the foundation stone for the commencement of the final phase of work. The Minister would also lay the foundation stone for the construction of 438 and 180 houses respectively at West Gate and Subramaniapuram by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board at a cost of Rs. 10.44 crore. Ministers Suba Thangavelan, I. Periasamy, K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran, K. R. Periyakaruppan, Thangam Thennarasu and A. Tamilarasi, MPs and MLAs would also participate.
