Flood situation grim in Bijapur, Belgaum districts

Staff Correspondent

Maharashtra releases 3.15 lakh cusecs of water from its dams

BIJAPUR: The Bhima, which rose above the danger mark, destroyed standing crops on large tracts of land besides flooding at least six residential areas in Indi and Sindagi taluks on Thursday.

Dasur, Umraj, Hale-sanka, Taddewad, Takli, Halepadnur, Hingani, Buyyara, Kedagi, Roadagi, Byadagihal, Gubbewad, and Tarapur have been cut off, with the approach roads being inundated. Although encircled by floodwaters, a large number of people chose not to move out from their villages for want of facilities in relief camps. Nearly 2,000 people moved to safety after their houses were flooded in Dasur, Hale Sanka, Taddewad, Takli, Halepadnur and Tarapur.

The Bhima was flowing at 12.8 m near the Takli bridge on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. The gauging centre at Pandarapur in Maharashtra, around 40 km from State's border, recorded a flow of 3,15,950 cusecs at noon on Thursday. The State is likely to feel the effect of this on Friday.

Vehicular traffic was hampered because many interlinking roads were under water at different stretches. The Dhulked-Chanegaum, Taddewad-Umrani, Umrani-Takli, Umraj-Chadchana, Agarkhed-Gubbewad and Tarapur-Almel roads were inundated.

He said Rs. 15 lakh each had been released for relief measures in Indi and Sindagi taluks and Rs. 5 lakh in Basavanabagewadi.

Boats arranged for rescue

Belgaum Staff Correspondent reports:

The Krishna continued to be in spate on Thursday because of torrential rain and the release of water from dams in Maharashtra. According to the district administration, 56 of the 71 affected villages in Chikkodi, Athani, Raibag and Gokak taluks have been surrounded by water. Boats have been arranged to transport villagers to safe places.

About 1.62 lakh cusecs of water was being let out into the Krishna from the Koyna dam in Maharashtra.

The outflow from Alamatti Dam was reduced from 3,00,584 cusecs on Wednesday to 2,77,740 cusecs on Thursday.
