Yadava College advances

MADURAI: Defending champion Loyola College (Chennai), last year's runner-up Jamal Mohamed College (Trichy), Yadava College (Madurai) and Sethu Institute of Technology (Kariapatti) entered the semifinals of the 17th annual Muthiah Ambalam Memorial Trophy State-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament organised by the American College here on Thursday.

The results (quarterfinals): Loyola College bt Sri Thangaraj College, Pollachi 25-8, 25-13; Jamal Mohd. College bt American College, Madurai 25-20, 25-21; Yadava College, Madurai bt Madura College 25-10, 25-13; Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti bt Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi 25-12, 25-15.

Pre-quarterfinals: Jamal Mohd. bt Thiagarajar College of Engg. 25-15, 25-11; American bt Saraswathy Narayanan College 25-17, 25-13; Sri Kaliswari bt Dr. N.G.P. Prabakaran shines

V.V. Prabakaran's six for 25 helped Arasaradi Cricket Club defeat TVS Srichakra XI by three wickets in the Madurai District Cricket Association first division `B' zone league here recently.

The scores: TVS Srichakra XI 135 in 30 overs (V.V. Prabakaran six for 25) lost to Arasaradi C.C 141 for seven in 24 overs (Anbu four for 38); Spark Colts CC 162 in 32 overs lost to Pykara Star CC 163 for six in 34 overs (Suresh Rajan 40).

Ram in sole lead

At Palani, Ram S. Krishnan of Chennai was the sole leader with 5.5 points at the end of the seventh round in the second annual Fide-rated Open chess tournament conducted by V.P.M. Trust and Palani Jyothi Chess Academy here on Thursday. Eleven players, including sixth round leader Sreekumar of Kerala, first seed, Preetham Sharma of Southern Railway, second seed Shyam Nikil of Madurai and third seed Natarajan of I.C.F, were in the second spot with 5 points each.

PSN in final

At Tiruchendur, PSN College, Melathedeyur beat Raja's Engineering College, Vadakkankulam 53-7 to set up a title clash with Sun Engg. College, Nagercoil which beat Government College of Engg, Tirunelveli 31-5 in the Anna University Zone 10 inter-engineering men's kabaddi tournament on Thursday.
