Federer eases past Grosjean

TORONTO: Top-ranked Roger Federer swept past Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday and won his 50th straight match in North America.

Federer broke Grosjean in the eighth game of the first set, started the second set with another break and then lost his own serve straightaway. He won the last three games to advance to a third round clash against the in-form Dmitry Tursunov of Russia.

Since he lost in the first round of Cincinnati in August 2004, Federer has won eight successive North American tournaments, including the last two U.S. Opens.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea 6-4, 6-3.

Stosur's day out

In the JP Morgan Chase Open at Carson (California), Lindsay Davenport's comeback ended with a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 loss to Australia's Samantha Stosur.

The top-seeded Maria Sharapova routed Anastassia Rodionova of Russia 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

Serena Williams continued her comeback, beating fellow American Ashley Harkleroad 6-3, 6-2. Ranked 110th, Serena is playing in her second tournament since January after being out with a knee injury.
