Body of woman found

Tuticorin: A body of a woman aged about 35 years was found under mysterious circumstances at Alwarthoppu near here on Wednesday. Strangulation marks were visible on her neck. The police had recovered a purse lying by her side in which few bus tickets were found.

The Srivaikundam police are investigating the case based on a complaint lodged by N. Ramakrishnasamy, Village Administrative Officer, Sriparangunallur.

Ganja seized

Tuticorin: The police seized ganja from S. Perumal (39) at Arumuganeri near here on Wednesday evening.

The accused was carrying 50 gm of ganja in a concealed packet. He was remanded to judicial custody under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Boy missing

Tuticorin: A 14-year-old boy is reported missing from Nazareth. On August 3, Vinayagam, a X standard student of a higher secondary school at Nazareth, had asked his father to buy him a new dress. His father did not oblige following which the did not return home after attending the classes that day.

Two arrested

Tuticorin: Two persons were arrested on the charge of assaulting one P. Antony (40) at Vilathikulam on Wednesday night.

Marimuthu (21) and Arogyasamy (50) attacked the complainant with a sickle over a dispute, while he was standing at Chidambara Nagar.

Assault alleged

Tuticorin: The Kadalkudi police are on the look out for three persons who had allegedly assaulted Mariammal (65) and her relative Chinnappan (60) at V.Subbiahpuram near here on Wednesday. The accused had attacked the two with a sickle owing to a previous enmity. The injured were admitted to Vilathikulam Government Hospital.

Tension in village

Tuticorin: Tension prevailed for a while at Velayudhapuram village near Kazhugamalai on Thursday, following the death of a girl.

Subba (15) committed suicide on Thursday by hanging from the roof of her house. The villagers turned into sides based on religious lines and attempted to flare up the issue. A team led by Superintendent of Police John Nicholson and Assistant Superintendent of Police Aswin Kotnis Mukund was stationed there .— Staff Reporter

Grievance day meeting

PUDUKOTTAI: The farmers' grievance day meeting will be held at the Collectorate at 11 a.m. on Friday. Collector S. J. Chiru has appealed to the farmers to take part in the meeting.

ITI admissions on

TIRUCHI: Admission of students to Government Industrial Technical Institutes (ITIs) has commenced for the current year. The applications should be sent before August 21, a press release said.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 106.83 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 9,592 cusecs and the outflow 18,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

LBP water to be released on Aug. 15

ERODE: Bhavani water from the Lower Bhavani Project reservoir will be released on August 15. According to a press release from the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, the water would be released for four months to benefit farmers in Erode and Karur. The release would benefit farmers' wet crop on 1.03 lakh acres, the release said and added that the release would be for four months. - Staff Reporter

Body found

SALEM: The body of a man was found in a well in Erumapalayam here on Thursday. The police said the deceased was identified as Murali (32) of Cuddalore district. Personnel from the Sevvapet Fire Station retrieved the body.

Arrested

SALEM: A man killed his five-year-old daughter near Mecheri on Wednesday night.

According to the police, Mathesh (28) of Viruthasampatti near Mecheri stabbed his daughter Santhiya to death. His neighbours caught him and handed him over to the police. - Staff Reporter

Action ordered

NAMAKKAL: The Collector, G. Sundaramurthi, has directed officials to initiate action against the employee of a fair price shop for irregularities here on Thursday. A release said the Collector inspected the fair price shops in Paramathi Velur and found the weight of goods distributed in a fair price shop less. - Staff Reporter

`Farmer's death not related to scheme'

CHENNAI: The death of a farmer in Krishnagiri district has no relation to the Government's policy of providing wasteland to poor farmers, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi told the Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to an issue raised by M. Thambidurai (AIADMK) during zero hour, Mr Karunanidhi said Dodaiyaa, a 55-year-old farmer, had encroached upon government poromboke land in Doddapellur village in Krishnagiri district and was in possession of the land for the last four or five years. Doddapellur panchayat president Selvi along with villagers approached him to give the land for building a government high school. This happened about 10 days ago and no government official had intervened in this matter. It was reported that the farmer committed suicide on August 7 out of anxiety that he might have to lose the land. — Special Correspondent

Teachers go on mass casual leave

NEYVELI: A section of teachers and lecturers of the Jawahar Education Society-run institutions, established on the Neyveli Lignite Corporation premises, went on "mass casual leave" on Thursday in support of their 27-point charter of demands.

However, the Jawahar CBSE and Matriculation schools, along with 11 school annexes and the Jawahar Science College functioned with full complement of students, numbering over 16,000 and lean staff.

K.Venkatesan, president of the Joint Action Council of the Jawahar Educational Society Schools and College Teachers and Office Employees, claimed that 98 per cent of the teachers did not turn up.

However, V.Narayanan, Society president and the NLC Chief Vigilance Officer, told The Hindu that 50 per cent of the teachers, mostly temporary staff, turned up for duty.

Mr. Venkatesan said from August 11, teachers would observe sit-in strike and from August 14 they would go on an indefinite strike. — Special Correspondent

Engineer killed in accident

ERODE: Twentynine-year-old engineer Subramaniam was killed in a road accident in Erode on Thursday morning.

According to police, a lorry rammed his two-wheeler from behind when he applied the brakes to avoid hitting a cyclist.

He died on way to the hospital, police added. — Staff Reporter

Industrialist arrested on cheating charge

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police on Thursday arrested industrialist K.Balachandran (50), on charges of cheating.

Based on a complaint from another industrialist Ravichandran, a case was registered against him on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust.

The complainant alleged that Mr. Balachandran had misused the name and post box number of his firm. The arrested industrialist is the president of Coimbatore District Small Scale Industries Association (CODISSIA).

He was produced before Judicial Magistrate I and remanded to judicial custody. — Staff Reporter

Port Trust's new record in cargo handling

CHENNAI: Chennai Port Trust has set a new record for total cargo handled in a day — 2,71,065 tonnes — on August 9, surpassing the previous record of 2,58,145 tonnes on April 6.
