CHENNAI: The condition of Congress MP from Tirunelveli Dhanushkodi Athithan, who is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals here, "remains very critical" according to hospital sources.
Medical bulletin
A medical bulletin issued by the hospital said on Thursday: "His haemodynamic status is stable, but he has multiple organ failure, a natural consequence of any major trauma." His kidneys had failed consequent to the massive trauma and internal bleeding and he had been put on dialysis. He continued to be on ventilator support and had multiple fractures. The hospital sources said a panel of specialists was closely evaluating and managing all aspects of the multiple organ failure in the critical care unit. Mr. Athithan was injured in a road accident on August 5. His wife Indhira was killed on the spot and four others, including his daughter Sindiya, were injured, when the car in which they were travelling overturned after one its tyres burst at Vagaikulam near Tuticorin. Treated initially at a local hospital, Mr. Athithan's right hand was amputated and he underwent abdominal surgery performed to remove blood clots. He was flown into Chennai on Wednesday for specialised intensive care.
Karunanidhi visits
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi visited Mr. Athithan on Thursday evening. He was accompanied by Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin, Higher Education Minister K.Ponmudi and Food Minister E.V.Velu.
