K-1000 begins with Super Special Stage

BANGALORE: Karnataka's premier motor racing event — the K-1000 — will commence with the exciting Super Special Stage at Jakkur, near here, on August 11. The cars will head to Jakkur after the flag-off from The Club in the morning.

The Time-Speed-Distance format of the motor rally will be held at Pandit's farm, Borapura, near Maddur, on Aug. 12 and 13. The rally will be run over a total distance of 600-km, with the Special Stages covering 120-km on dirt roads.

The Rally is the fourth round of the Indian National Rally Championship (the third event, namely the Coimbatore round, was not held) and at this stage the race for the title is wide open. Naren Kumar (Ram Kumar) of JK Tyre leads by a solitary point over Karandip Singh (Jaidas Menon) of Team MRF.

Naren has 22 points to Karandip's 21 and the former's teammate Gaurav Gill (Farooq Ahmed) is also in striking distance with 18.

Keen fight

The other sections in the INRC too are delicately balanced. In the 1400cc class, Arindam Ghosh heads the field with 17 points followed closely by Girijashankar Joshy (16). Last year's champion Sanjay Aggarwal is also a strong title contender with 15.

In the Rally Star Cup, it's a two-way race between Amanpreet Ahluwalia (24), who is ahead of Rajesh Gadakh by one point. The Gypsy Class is, however, in complete control of Saket Shanbagh with 28 points.

A record field of 47 cars, barring last minute drop-outs, will line up for the starter's flag. A lot of first timers are in the fray, making the start list the highest in the country so far.

The K-1000 is being run for the 32nd year and has been sponsored by Xenolix-MICO Bosch and Grand Prix. — Special Correspondent
