Floods: official reviews relief operations

Call for strengthening health, drinking water and free food supply

JEYPORE : Revenue Divisional Commissioner of south Orissa Parag Gupta directed that the district administration take necessary relief measures in flood- affected areas of Koraput district at a review meeting on Monday.

He stressed on strengthening health, drinking water facilities and free food supply to affected villages and advised health officials to send medical teams to prevent the spread of epidemic diseases. Mr. Gupta directed agriculture officials in the supply of subsidised seeds and fertilisers to farmers who had lost their crops and called for sanctioning the Indira Awas Yojna for people who had lost their houses in the floods.

District officials stated around 10,400 hectares of cultivated land were water locked and sandcast. Around 100 cattle and five persons were killed and close to 5,000 houses were damaged . The total loss is estimated to be Rs. 10 crores out of which around Rs. 6.7 crores was in the Roads and Buildings department. District Collector of Koraput, Subha Sharmawas present at the meeting.

Stolen goods recovered

The Sadar police at Makaguda village under Jeypore block seized stolen goods worth over Rs. 20,000 from six persons on Monday. The goods recovered were stolen from a voluntary organisation on July 30. Sadar police officer, P.K. Rona conducted the raids and arrested Neeladiri Pujari, Duryan Chandria, Nanda Chandria, Bayabudi Chandria, Thirda Chandria and Eswar Pujari. The arrested have been produced in court.
