TIRUPATI: A two-day workshop on `Identifying indicators for measuring the extent of implementation of CEDAW' began at Sri Padmavathi Women's University (SPMVV) here on Thursday. The meet is aimed at publicising CEDAW, the global instrument to eliminate discrimination against women in all walks of life, to which 179 countries are signatories. Academicians from several south Indian universities, police personnel and officials from the juvenile justice department were attending the UGC-sponsored regional workshop. In her inaugural address, SPMVV Vice-Chancellor Veena Noble Dass lamented that gender equality and socio-economic empowerment had not been attained yet, indicating that change should come from within for every woman, which should happen at the family level itself. She also requested that the proceedings be communicated to national and State commissions for women, Government departments and other agencies for effective implementation of CEDAW.
`Call for collective effort'
Varsity Rector T.V. Subba Rao traced the historical genesis of CEDAW convention and felt that it had not been effectively implemented due to legal loopholes. He suggested that the judiciary, executive and the legislature make a collective effort for its proper implementation. Director of Centre for Women's Studies K. A. Parvathy welcomed while associate professor D. B. Krishna Kumari proposed a vote of thanks.
