Journalism award

KOLLAM: This year's R. Krishnaswamy Award for Journalism goes to Waheed Saman of Varthamanam. This was announced at a press conference here by Editor of Kerala Shabdam B.A. Rajakrishnan, and the former editor of Janayugam Thengamam Balakrishnan. The award is instituted by Kerala Shabdam and Kollam Press Club. Mr. Saman won the award for his series, ''Harithakanthiyile Venalpakarcha''. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs.10,000, will be presented to him by Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan at a function here on August 20. — Staff Reporter

Circus begins today

KOLLAM: Mayor N. Padmalochanan will inaugurate the show by Jumbo Circus at the Cantonment Maidan here on Friday. The managers of the show claimed that in addition to novel items, a group of Russian artistes are also performing. - - Staff Reporter

Kamaraj birth anniversary

KOLLAM: The 104th birth anniversary of K. Kamaraj, former Chief Minister of Madras , will be observed here on August 13 by the Nadar Sanghom. President of the sanghom A.L. Srinivasan said the observance to be held at the Nadar Sangam Hall here would be inaugurated by Kollam Mayor N. Padmalochanan. Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Madurai Division M. Plea to Education Minister

KOLLAM: Teachers Training Certificate (TTC) holders, working as ministerial staff at lower and upper primary schools, have registered their protest against the failure of the PSC to invite application from them for posting as teachers. In a petition submitted to Education Minister M.A. Baby, they urged the Government to issue the necessary orders so as to enable the PSC to invite applications from them for the purpose. — Staff Reporter

Minister to be guest of honour

KOTTAYAM: Minister for Public Works P.J. Joseph will be the guest of honour at the Independence Day celebrations being organised by the district authorities here. The formal celebrations will be held at Police Parade Grounds on Tuesday. Contingents from armed reserved police, local police, NCC, Scouts and Guides will participate. — Staff Reporter

Takes over as OPIL chief

KOTTAYAM: V.B. Binu, CPI leader and trade unionist, has taken over as the new chairman of Oil Palm India Ltd., (OPIL), a joint venture of Central and State governments. A lawyer at Kottayam bar, he assumed office at the central office of OPIL here on Thursday. - Staff Reporter

Hartal at Kunnamkulam

THRISSUR: A hartal was called by the Congress in Kunnamkulam town on Thursday in protest against the alleged police torture of the mother of a party activist and arrest of some Youth Congress activists on Wednesday. Several shops and business establishments remained closed. Vehicular services were exempted from the hartal. The police said there were no reports of any untoward incident in the town. — Staff Reporter

Mild tremors at Erattupetta

KOTTAYAM: Erattupetta, the hilly terrain bordering Idukki district, experienced minor tremors early Thursday morning. According to local people, more than half-a-dozen tremors, preceded by rumbling noises, were experienced between five and six o'clock in the morning. The area is experiencing heavy downpour for the past 24 hours. Authorities, however, said that they could not experience any major tremors in the area. - - Staff Reporter

IUML condemns attack on Lebanon

KOZHIKODE: Indian Union Muslim League's (IUML) State president Syed Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal on Thursday appealed to the Union Government to strive to put an end to the Israeli attacks on Lebanon. "Indian Government should play a proactive role to end the attacks on civilians in Lebanon", the IUML leader said. - - Special Correspondent

CSB told to allot shares on rights basis

Thrissur: The Company Law Board has ordered the Catholic Syrian Bank to allot shares on rights basis in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Companies Act. The order was issued on a complaint filed by the Catholic Syrian Bank Shareholders' Association against the issue of shares through preferential allotment and private placement. The board had earlier stayed preferential allotment and private placement. - - Staff Reporter

Sandalwood seized

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The authorities have seized illegally stocked sandalwood and red sandalwood during raids conducted in several parts of Malapppuram district. The Chief Conservator (Vigilance) said here on Thursday that the seizures consisted of 483 kg of sandalwood and 12 kg of red sandalwood. Two persons were arrested in connection with the seizures. - Special Correspondent

Sobha John moves court

KOCHI: The main accused in the Sabarimala Tantri Kandararu Mohanararu attack case Sobha John on Thursday filed a petition before the High Court asking for early posting of the revision petition filed by the State to cancel the bail granted to her by the lower court. Meanwhile, second accused in the case Vigil filed a bail application before the Ernakulam Sessions Court. The court will consider this petition on Friday. - UNI
