Special train between Hubli and Kochuveli

HUBLI: South Western Railway will run a weekly special train between Hubli and Kochuveli to clear the extra rush during the festival season, according to a release.

The new service will come into effect from August 15 from the Hubli end and from August 17 from the Kochuveli end.

Accordingly, the Hubli-Kochuveli Weekly special train (0671) will leave Hubli every Tuesday at 1.45 p.m. and reach Kochuveli at 4.30 p.m. the next day.

In the return direction, the Kochuveli- Hubli special will leave Kochuveli every Thursday at 12.45 p.m. and reach Hubli at 4.40 p.m. the next day, the release added. — Staff Correspondent

Upparas' conference

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Rajya Uppara Sangha will hold a convention of Upparas at Kustagi in Koppal district on Friday to press for their inclusion in the list of Scheduled Castes.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, H.C. Neeravari, MLC, said the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda would inaugurate the convention and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy would release a souvenir "Uppara Sri".

Several Ministers will participate in the convention. The Upparas number 25 lakhs in the State. — Special Correspondent

MP's plea on food park

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party MP for Dharwad (South) Manjunath Kunnur has urged the Centre to select Haveri district as one of the locations for the four food parks that are to be set up in Karnataka.

In a submission in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, he noted that apart from the Byadgi chillies, which attract buyers from different countries, the area also produced mangoes and maize.

In addition, it had a good transport facility.

HASSAN: The Channarayapatna Taluk Panchayat had resolved unanimously to urge the Government to declare the taluk as drought-hit in the general body meeting held on Wednesday. Employees stage dharna

BIDAR: Members of the Sanchar Nigam Executive Association staged a daylong dharna in protest against the apathy of their employer Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. about their problems, in Bidar on Thursday. Protestors sat in a dharna in front of the district head office and shouted slogans against the management. They said that the management had not fulfilled demands such as merging half the DA with their basic pay, constitution of a wage revision committee, removal of ceiling on gratuity and bonus payments and removal of discriminatory tax on prerequisites. — Staff Correspondent

Woman dies of burns

RAICHUR: Padmavati, wife of Srinivas, reportedly received burns after her sari caught fire while she was trying to light the oven in her kitchen in Thimmapur locality in Raichur city on Wednesday. She died at the district civil hospital. The Netajinagar police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Chennappa from Hemnur village of Deodurga taluk and Ramu and Hemanna from Manvi town on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 60,000 from them on Wednesday. They have been remanded to judicial custody. Separate cases have been registered at the Deodurga and the Manvi police stations. — Staff Correspondent

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging the underground power cable network, the following areas in Hubli will not have power supply between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release. The areas affected are Judges Quarters, Adhyapaknagar, Vijaynagar, Ashok Nagar, Bailappanavar Nagar, Kumbhakonam Plot, Aparna Apartment, Ramadoot Complex, Deshpandenagar and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

Procession

BHADRAVATI: The Dalit Sangharsh Samiti on Wednesday took out a procession in protest against the implementation of the Upper Bhadra Project. The district vice-president of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) Yashavanta Rao Ghorpade, who flagged off the procession at the main Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus stand here, urged the Government to abandon the project. BHADRAVATI: Leaders of Helava Samaj have said that the Government's scheme to provide Rs. 1000 for funeral expenses to families living below poverty line is not being property implemented. Payment for sugarcane farmers

Bangalore: Minister for Rural Water Supply and Sugar S.A. Ravindranath on Wednesday announced that the public sector undertaking Mysore Sugars Limited would pay Rs. 1,100 per tonne to farmers during the crushing period of 2006-07. The Minister said 22 sugar factories in the cooperative sector had also agreed to pay Rs. 1,100 per tonne of sugarcane. — Staff Reporter

Learning centre

Bangalore: Wipro Cares, a Trust promoted by IT major Wipro, in association with a non-governmental organisation, opened a learning centre here on Thursday that will focus on providing an "enriching, exciting and secure environment" for children from the economically disadvantaged sections of society. Wipro Cares, an initiative of Wipro and its employees to engage in community development, has supported the initiative of the NGO, Makkala Jagriti, that focuses on working with the children to set up community-based learning centres. "While regular schools support the academic development of the child, there is a need to provide access to quality learning in an enjoyable environment. This is an attempt to provide such an opportunity to children," said Wipro vice-president (Community Initiatives) Vijay Gupta. — Special Correspondent

New ISEC director

BANGALORE: N. Jayaram, a sociologist at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, will be the next director of the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore. A notification to this effect was issued by Governor T.N. Chaturvedi in his capacity as ISEC president on the recommendation of a search committee headed by C. Rangarajan, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, according to a release. Prof. Jayaram succeeds Gopal K. Kadekodi, who will retire on September 5. He will hold office for five years. Prof. Jayaram is currently head of the Centre for Research Methodology at the Mumbai Institute. — Special Correspondent

PGCET counselling

Bangalore: On Thursday, the second day of PGCET counselling for MCA seats, 800 candidates with ranks from 601 to 1,400 were allotted seats in 71 colleges. This included counselling through video conferencing and e-counselling. In Bangalore, 661 candidates attended and in Belgaum 139 candidates. On Friday, counselling is scheduled for candidates with ranks from 1,401 to 2,306. Selected for conference

Bangalore: Suthikshin Kumar, Professor of Information Science at PES Institute of Technology, has achieved a breakthrough in public key cryptography and solved a long-standing problem in this field, the institute has said. The result of his research has been selected for presentation at the international conference "Military Communication Conference 2006" at Washington DC in October. Public key cryptographic systems have applications in banking, network security and credit card transaction systems. — Special Correspondent

Yeshasvini network

Bangalore: Ninety-one private hospitals have been included in the list of network hospitals under the Yeshasvini Cooperative Farmers Health Care Scheme. The scheme has also been extended to cover medical emergency, neonatal care and angioplasty. Twenty-five hospitals have been deleted from the list of networked hospitals because they did not have infrastructure. At a meeting of the Yeshasvini Cooperative Farmers Health Care trust, members decided that all networked hospitals also have to provide 25 per discount on all investigations and procedures under the scheme, a release said. — Staff Reporter
