NEW DELHI: Indraprastha Gas Limited, sole supplier of compressed and piped natural gas, stopped the CNG supply to hotels in the Capital on Wednesday in view of the expected shortage in the supply due to disruption in production on account of the floods in Gujarat. With there being no production of natural gas in the ONGC-Reliance-British Gas operated Panna/Mukta and Tapti fields from where over 40 million standard cubic metres per day of gas is supplied for power and fertiliser plants and CNG operations in Delhi, IGL decided to ask the hotels to switch over to alternative fuels. IGL Managing Director A.K. De said despite the cessation in production of gas in Gujarat there was no cause for panic yet in Delhi as the company had enough gas supplies to last it well over a week without any rationing. "We have not received any directions for rationing so far. As for the hotels, we have only asked them to switch over to other fuels since they have the option available to them." Mr. De said the gas supplies to the Delhi's CNG-run public transport system, numerous households which use piped natural gas, various commercial establishments, hospitals and even temples has not been affected. "We do not intend to curtail any of these supplies since there are sufficient reserves. Moreover, the gas fields are expected to become operational in the next couple of days and thereafter the gas supply would be further augmented."
